English sits at the heart of our curriculum. We want every child to develop a love of reading, confidence in writing, and the ability to communicate clearly.
Our aims reflect the National Curriculum and our policy, which states that we strive to “equip pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.”
Reading
Reading is a “fundamental part of everything we do.” Children encounter high‑quality texts across the curriculum and develop skills through whole‑class reading, VIPERS, and daily story time.
We promote reading for pleasure through:
- Book celebrations
- Reading assemblies
- Library visits
- Author studies
- Class reading corners
Writing
Writing is taught through rich stimuli — books, film clips, artefacts, visitors, and real experiences. Children learn to write for real purposes and audiences, developing vocabulary, grammar, and creativity.
Spoken Language
Children learn to speak clearly, listen carefully, and express their ideas with confidence across all subjects.
